'WHAT IF"

WHAT IF......you shared a double boat slip with another boater and one day when you came into the slip you had a bit of a mishap and caused some minor damage to your neighbor's boat (when they weren't there). What would you do?

The reason for such a specific "what if" this week is because it happened over the weekend. I will give details later so as not to take the emphasis away from the question at hand. Don't feel you have to be a boater to give an opinion. Thanks!

Well, if I had a boat, I'd have insurance so I would come clean with the other boat owner and if the damage was bad enough I'd submit a claim with my insurance company. If the damage wasn't too bad, I might just pay it out of my pocket. It's just good karma to be cool. :-)

I'd be cool like Lynn

Ring the other person immediately and tell them what happened.

Are you asking because the person who did the damage denied/did not report it? that would be really lousy!

That is easy...I would leave a note on the other boat explaining what happened along with my contact and insurance information.

also include the date and time of incident.

I agree with italco.

Pirates never had these dilemmas. I'd claim I was a pirate and tell the other person they should consider themselves lucky that I didn't board their scurvy raft, steal their liquor and have at it with their women.

But it's easier to just come clean and (like Lynn said) better Karma. Pirates had lousy Karma I'm sure.

i'd leave a note. i've done it before. i would also find someone with a camera to take a pic of the damage. i wouldn't want to be blamed for any damage i wasn't responsible for.

well, either that or i would say aaaarrghhh a few times, call people matey, and run with ram's idea.

The camera and pics is a great idea and would have been even better had it been my idea. I don't like that nonnie person coming around hear showing us honest folks up like that.

Thank you all for your comments. It's nice to know that my blog buddies all have a conscience, something our slip neighbors obviously lack.

First off, this is how it occurred. Friday, Mr. YNB detailed the boat, so obviously he knew the condition of every inch of the boat. (He's a bit anal). We have a pontoon so he did this when we were out on the lake and beached on the shoreline. When we came back to the slip Friday our neighbor's boat was not there. Anyway, on Saturday we were going to go out on the boat (in fact I mentioned it to Italco), but when we got down to the marina, it started thundering and a wind had kicked up so we decided against going out. But, from the parking lot we did see our neighbor's boat was in the slip and the wife was on the boat, obviously waiting for her hubby. We drove off. A little while later when the weather was nicer, we decided to try again. This time their boat was gone and our boat had a dent and scratch along the side.

On Sunday, Mr. YnB went down to the marina to cover it up and our neighbors were there. He confronted them nicely, but not only did they not fess up, they immediately denied it. The wife even had the gall to say "you should expect damage, look at how close our two boats are." Well, things got a bit ugly (on their behalf - my hubby is totally a non-confrontational kind of guy so he tried to temper them down, but was unable to). So, he left. He has reported it to the marina, but that's it. He doesn't want to pursue it any further since the amount of damage doesn't warrant it.

The real issue here is owning your actions. Why can't people just admit when they've made a mistake or had an accident? Now, it's just going to be uncomfortable every time we see them.

Their boat would unfortunately sink during the night...gotta expect that sort of thing when your boats are so close together...lol kidding of course...you did the right thing.

Isn't it funny how they were the ones that became confrontational when it was them that created the issue?

Bastards! Want me to make a couple of wax images and stick pins in 'em?

Italco...now that's an idea! ;-)

NW...I like that.... and if you could add some hillbilly accents that would just about do it! :-)

that was supposed to be NM (not NW)

If I may suggest something a little too late:

Spraypaint the name of the local high school and something disparaging about another local highschool onto the deck and hurl a couple of toilet paper rolls around.

Voila. It's those rotten kids again. Damn them.

CLT....and if they don't buy that one, we could always use the old stand-by....those darn night trolls that come out of the lake when no one's around. And, what do you expect anyway when the boats are so close together?

I would have to tell them. I am horrible at keeping secrets.

Soup...glad to know you have a conscience!! :-)
